The best part of this picture is just how lame it is. This reminds me of when I do an impression of people and just say something like “I’m Bill Clinton, got any cigars?!?” in a high voice. It gets all the laughs from the ladies.

Good luck to all players tryn out for teams this weekend. I had a tryout 4 the saints 4 years ago and the rest is history!

Just a quick reminder of why we watch sports.  It’s like seeing the 250 pound guys crying at the draft because his dream has actually come true.

You shouldn’t watch for T.O. or the guys on your fantasy team.  It’s really about the fringe players scratching and clawing to make a living doing what they love.

Or becoming a legit force at tight end like Billy Miller.

So think about those guys waiting by the phone for that call that they’ve made a team… even if they have to pack up and move to Jacksonsville.

Happy NFL Schedule Day Everybody!

Here is the weird thing. Why do people care about today? We know who your favorite team plays years in advance (aside from a couple of games) by this simple formula:

6 Games: Everyone in your division once
4 Games: Rotating in-conference opponents
4 Games: Rotating out-of-conference opponents

That’s a total of 14 of the 16 games of the NFL season. Today on some of my team’s (Giants) message boards I see threads on speculation as to who the team will play when and looking for news from beat reporters trying to break it early. I can break most of the 2010 NFL schedule here and now:

You will play about half your division games in the first 6 weeks and the other half in the last 6 and then sprinkle every other game in the middle.

Finding out when one team plays another isn’t the reason why we care so much. The reason is simple, football leaves us wanting more.

Now the NFL is giving us more and this is being herald as a great thing. The first in this new fashion of the NFL giving more is the NFL draft this week. The draft is going from a Saturday and Sunday event during the early afternoon and early evening to a huge scene starting in Prime Time on Thursday night. This has everyone talking and excited to see the first few picks really highlighted right up again your favorite sitcoms (or whatever ABC is showing that night – oh, burn!).

What about the sport’s fan?

I am not talking about just the NFL fan but fans of all sports. This is usually one of the best weekends for a true sports fan. Wake up in the morning, get some beers and a pizza for your friends and spend the day playing Madden and watching the picks then as the sun goes down change the channel and check out some NBA and NHL playoff games. Now that tradition is destroyed. The NFL draft is right up against Cleveland vs. Chicago in the NBA and three NHL games. To compare the first and only NHL game Saturday is at 3 PM and the first NBA game is at 2:00 PM. If the NFL draft stayed on Saturday you could do it all.

Bill Simmons introduced to me the “disease of more” in a column back in October. He explained it as follows:

In his book “Showtime,” Pat Riley unveiled “the disease of more” and argued that “success is often the first step toward disaster.”

The NFL is so successful right now it seems to be forgetting why it is the king of the sport’s mountain. It is a product that is based around leaving you wanting more. Overexposure is what I fear for the NFL. It needs to stay away from becoming just another sport.

The NFL is like that girl who is way out of your league when she lets you hang out with her for coffee every once in awhile, then you don’t see her for months. You eventually date her and realize she is batshit crazy and you need to take a break from seeing her to get some space. It was a lot more special when you just had coffee and got excited for the next time you see her.

The NFL right now is the hot girl you are having coffee with. Now with rumors of expanding the season, bringing the superbowl to different countries and the expansion of days for the draft the NFL is close to over exposure.

Not many people care about the regular season of MLB, NBA, and NHL until the last month or two of the season. The balance of events for the NFL is perfect right now. In the NFL we as fans care about every single regular season game, we watch the combine because we hunger for anything resembling football. We go to training camps to see someone, even if it is guys that will never make the team, try their hardest. When was the last time you had an MLB draft party? Exactly.
